In this thread I'll give an explanation about Shadowrun. First, in this game you play as shadowrunners. Shadowrunners are considered "deniable assets." Its your job to do the dirty work for others in the underworld. Your allies are gangers, turncoats, mob bosses, and other assorted low-lives. Now how did it get so bad? That is a long story.
It all starts in 1999, after a 3 month trucker strike in New York City all flow of fresh food almost completely stopped causing a riot that killed hundreds and injured thousands. When the mob attacked a research company's waste disposal truck carrying infectious waste if turned into a running fire fight. The company assured the government that it was to prevent the cargo from infecting the population at large so the government granted company's to have armed forces to protect personnel and property. In 2001, corporations were given the same rights as independent nations.
In 2014, a man calling himself Howling Coyote declared he was a shaman of the Ghost Dance claiming all of North America as Indian territory and demanded the removal of all but Native Indians. The media made a laughingstock of HC and the government said "go fly a kite." A week later, Redondo Peak erupted, burying Los Alamos, New Mexico under a cloud of ash. HC took credit. for 2 years the government tried to attack HC, but freak weather slowed the military enough to prevent them even seeing their prey. The government issuses an idea to exterminate the "Indian Problem" by killing all Native Americans. Just as the plan gets moving Mount Hood, Mount Rainer, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams erupt with a cataclysmic fury. In 2018, half the U.S.A. was singed over to the Native American Nations and included a 10 year plan to relocate non-Indians. In the confusion, the remaining southern states broke off to form the Confederate American States.
In 2021, 1 in 10 people suddenly metamorphosed into hideous humanoid shapes. Some were sort and painless other died weeks later screaming in agony. those that recovered where dubbed "orks" and "trolls." Some normal children also changed over time to join their ranks. Also about this time a phenomenon called Unexplanded Genetic Expression or UGE causing mutant and changling children born to normal parents. These children were dubbed "elves" and "dwarfs." As racism for these new races hit the world by storm a virus as deadly as the Black Plague struck the world and killed a quarter of the population racial violence flickered out.
2024, magic began to work. The effects were minor and inefficient but provable. 2 years later mages suddenly didn't need huge circles and rituals to do magic just suddenly it was efficient. At this time however, the first paranormal critters began to appear. Most notably when a dragon tried to make its home at Mount Rushmore. Of course most mages were in the employ of corporations so the megacorps were the biggest developers of magic.
All this time and science moves on. In 2025, the first successful cybernetic limb was attached causing the cybernetic revolution.
