"Tsk, I knew it, there is the second objective, at least it's not my problem so let's just get this over with already."

"Hmmm. Seems a risky way of going about it, attaching one of your intelligence people to a heavy combat unit like the ODST. However, discussing the practicality of our orders is a bit beyond the scope of our mandate, so bottom line this for me: What do we need to do to help you carry that out? Is just observation and careful notes on enemy combatants we encounter going to do it, or is there more?"
One year's salary says there's more.

"I have a PDA with recording and a place to store data. I need to record some Covenant interaction, record a part of a battle, and take notes when we aren't shooting. Basically thats it and who knows, you all might get nice fat promotions for a very successful mission."

"Sure." Unlikely, there is a reason we call them spooks.

"Hell, if this goes flawless, I might even be your permanent CO."

"So, we'll try and sneak up on some Covenant personnel who are having a chat, and you can use the PDA to record a firefight or too. Fair enough."
Possible promotion for doing something I was already going to do isn't that bad a deal, all in all.[/i]
"Well, you aren't doing a half bad job so far, sir. I mean, at least we know you can take a fall and not complain about it."
At the very least, he could be doing FAR worse. Still... big shoes.... MIND ON THE MISSION, SOLDIER. It won't do to get everyone else killed because you're too busy thinking about how things used to be.

The COMM channel crackles to life."I have 5 enemy contacts, Looks like an elite and 4 grunts. Plasma rifle and pistols. To your east at about 50 meters closing on your position. Suggest you set up ambush."

"Sounds like a plan. Let's get this started." I turn to the lieutenant and say, "I suggest you hang back and provide cover fire since your arm is broken."

Showtime.
"Tiny and I'll set up in the trees by this hill here, Dragoon - you and tech set up on the opposite side of the path.
All of you, stay in cover and hold fire until my mark.
Shifty, you have LOS to provide support fire?"
Wait - the CO doesn't have comms.
He uses hand signals to inform the lieutenant of the approaching enemy, then motions for the lieutenant to get behind the trees and wait.[/i]
Tactics Roll - 3,17,7 vs 11 (Cognition) = MOS of 10. That'll be a fun surprise for the enemy.

"You should already know the answer to that Bones. Just give the order."The squad sets up near and waits for the Covenant. Five minutes later an Elite and 4 grunts leisurely strolling along the path. Seems like a routine patrol. They start moving into the kill zone.

"Hold..."
I hope the Lieutenant is filming this - I think walking around like you're on some sort of damn picnic when patrolling an area you know Helljumpers have landed in is the sort of tactical stupidity that could prove decisive.
Okay, time's up.

They move into the middle of the killzone and the elite begins sniffing. The grunts are confused by this and raise their pistols and frantically scan. As Bones orders them to fire, the elite snaps his head in the direction of most of the ODSTs and levels his plasma rifle. What looks like a grin goes across his... face?

As Dragoon arms and throws a frag grenade and readies his rifle. Tiny takes one shot with his pistol, aiming for the Grunt's methane tank. He nails it... barely and it explodes throwing a hellish inferno of fire and shrapnel into the group. However the desired effect was not obtained and the group was only slightly burned by the fire except for the charred and bloodied remains of the grunt Tiny hit. Tiny gets in another shot before the grenade detonates, putting a bullet into the chest of an already slightly burned grunt seriously injuring him. The grenade then explodes finishing off the remaining Grunts. A Silver shimmer flares around the elite but holds. Shots then rang out from Dragoon's rifle and hit the elite. The first taking bounced off the shield, the second took it down and embedded itself into its shoulder, and the last blast through his armor plate, only causing a slight wound though. The elite roared and shot 3 bolts from its Plasma rifle that hit dragoon's right wrist twice. The internal temperature of his suit raged and cause minor burns on his skin. Bones, at the same time, shot 5 rounds from his rifle, hitting the elite in the left foot, upper chest, and right wrist. The elite let out one last howl before toppling over.
